The nasopharynx lies behind the nasal cavity and is primarily involved in the passage of air. The openings of the auditory tubes are located in this region, and lymphoid tissue known as the pharyngeal tonsil, or adenoids, is also present.
The oropharynx lies behind the oral cavity and extends from the soft palate to approximately the level of the hyoid bone. It contains important lymphoid structures, including the palatine tonsils and the lingual tonsils. This region is frequently involved in acute pharyngitis and tonsillitis.

Streptococcal pharyngitis is particularly important because antibiotic treatment can reduce transmission and decrease the risk of certain complications.
